Slovenia

Slovenia is the only country in Europe that has the enthralling combination of the Alps, the Mediterranean, the Pannonian Plain and the Karst. The changing landscape is constantly surprising and often stunning. You can have one eye on the sea, whilst in the other direction be surrounded by high mountains. Heading up into the forests, you can see the green plains below you. From upland meadows your view stretches into river gorges. These wonderful contrasts are a hallmark of this beautiful country.

Located in the heart of Europe, this small green alpine country, much like Switzerland but with sea, sits between the always-romantic Italy and the graceful Austria. It is the only place in the world, where you can feel the energy of the Mediterranean and the elegance of the Alps at the same time.

Slovenia has architecturally grand and culturally rich cities, such as capital Ljubljana, which are ripe for exploring. However, the country is also host to some of Europe’s most breath-taking scenery; the spiralling snow-covered peaks of the Julian Alps, the majestic Postojna and Škocjan Caves, the sparkling emerald-green lakes and rivers, such as Bled and Soča (where the movie Narnia was filmed) and a stunning Adriatic coastline.

You may be looking for a relaxing location in which to stay whilst undergoing your medical treatment, a specialised medical-wellness programme or just a simple healthy and active getaway. If this is the case, then you must consider the Slovenian health resort of Portorož.

Portorož

This small Mediterranean city is situated at the most beautiful part of the northern Adriatic, gifted with a very beneficial seaside climate, evergreen vegetation, beautiful beaches, healthy Mediterranean cuisine and an exceptional spa and health tradition. Only two steps away from beautiful Trieste, Venice

or Ljubljana it is also the perfect location for exploring the history of the north Mediterranean. Its neighbour, the ancient Piran, is one of the most beautiful and preserved old Mediterranean cities in Europe, where you can experience the culture of three countries at once –Italy, Croatia and Austria.

This destination offers a higher price/performance in comparison to other western neighbours yet with less tourists than you would find in the traditionally over-crowded Croatian or Italian sea side resorts.

700 years of thalassotherapy

Portorož has been known as a health resort since the 13th century when the monks from the St Lawrence’s monastery healed
their patients with seawater and brine. The beneficial climate and healing properties of the nearby 700-year-old Sečovlje salt pans
have enabled a long tradition of health tourism and a very rich wellness offer, which Portorož has combined into unique experiences with first-class accommodation. These natural local factors, saltpan mud (Fango), sea water brine and thermal pre-historic sea water still form the primary elements of beauty treatments for conditions, such as rheumatism, ascites, lymphadenitis, obesity and the ailments of common wounds.

The city of negative ions

What can be more important for your health than the air you breathe? The concentration of healthy negative ions in sea air is almost 500 times higher than in city air. Therefore, sea air has positive effects on brain functions, processes of recuperation and the immune system. The concentration of negative ions is even higher near salt fields. Fortunately Portorož boasts such a location, since it lies directly between two salt fields (nature parks) – the Sečovlje salt pans and the Strunjan salt pans. Outdoor activities in Portorož are highly recommended to help aid your recover further.
